My Favorite Purchase of 2020!

If you told me in January of last year that I would have earnestly taken up an interest in birdwatching, I would have laughed in your face. I think I would have laughed even harder if you told me that my favorite purchase of 2020 would be a bird feeder. Birds…seriously?! Well, these are strange times we’re living in. And strange times call for low-budget entertainment.

My work-from-home setup faces out a window. Just outside that window is one of my beloved lilac bushes. As I would sit working, I noticed that birds gathered in the branches all the time. So, I started researching bird feeders, and found this version that suctions on to the window.

I will tell you one thing: I was not prepared for how entertaining the birds in my backyard would be! We’re stuck inside with this pandemic, and it always feels like I’m glued to one screen or another, whether it’s the computer for work or bingeing Netflix to unwind. It’s so nice to be able to watch and appreciate something going on outside in the real world.

I feel like I’m learning a lot, too. It’s so much fun to see the specific behaviors of the different species. The fat, fuzzy chickadees like to flit back and forth one-at-a-time like a runway show, while finches like to party and have as many birds in the feeder as possible at the same time. Every once in awhile, I get brilliant flashes of color from cardinals and blue jays. But my favorite visitor so far is the tufted titmouse. The titmice have funny little personalities and like to hang out in the window feeder longer than the other birds, cracking seeds open with their beaks.

The feeder has only been up for a couple of months so far, but I am so excited to see the new visitors that come in the spring and beyond!

Note, this post is not in any way sponsored! I just love this product a LOT and wanted to share 😄

What was your favorite purchase of 2020? How have you been keeping busy with all this time at home? Let me know in the comments!

xoxo, Karoline
